Student Work Week 7
Mr. Tany,
Thanks again for helping our students gain a better understanding of expressive art. In the class on Saturday, we had time to view and discuss about 10 of your paintings and the students were impressed for sure. They had a lot of positive things to say, especially about “Lillian” and ”Roses” and “Eucaliptus” which they all liked very much. We also discussed Jackson Pollock this week, but they overwhelmingly preferred your expressions over his, I thought you would enjoy to know.
I also gave them a handout with your information and three of your paintings on it so they could take it home with them as an example of good, pure expression. And I read them your quotes from your website about being a painter and what it means to be true in your expressions. They also love the idea that you are self-taught, because it makes being an artist seem more achievable for them as well. These kids are gaining an understanding of how art serves us all, makes us all better.
I sent you two pictures – the one called “Week 7 Student Work” is the work from this week and represents their very first attempt to paint anything abstractly. I think they did pretty well. Also, I attached the still lifes we did last week to give you an idea of what level they’re at (remember, they’re younglings still and this is their first art class). That one is called “Student Work” and is the best work they’ve done so far in this very short class.
I know I couldn’t do what they are doing when I was their age! Have a great evening, talk more soon.]

Matthew:
Hello Mr. Yos,
My name is Matthew Garrett and I teach an art class here in Peoria, IL, USA. We’re going to be covering expressive and abstract painting this week, and I’m going to show the students several examples of your truly fantastic work. I am a painter myself, and I really like your style. In any event, I would like to tell the students more about you, but there is no biographical information about you listed on the site I found. Where were you born, where are you now, how did you get into painting, etc etc. The kids would love to know. Thanks…
Matthew Garrett
